Medical School Memphis, Tennessee 38101 Acidophils exhibited marked quantitative variation in the anterior pituitary glands of
31 cyclic, nonmated female Syrian hamsters, ranging from 34.2% to 58.7%. Stage of
estrous cycle accounted for much of this variation with acidophils ranging from a high
average value of 56.2 ± 1.6% on Day 4 to a low of 39.5 ± 3.8% on Day 2. Mating of
eight females during the evening of Day 1 resulted in a significant additional decrease
in acidophils to 23.2 ± 0.9% on Day 2. Acidophilic degranulation thus occurred to a
less than maximal degree in the usual sequence of events comprising the hamster estrous
cycle with additional degranulation being caused by repeated acts of mating. It is postulated that this increased degranulation of acidophils which occurs in response to mating
may reflect the secretion of additional "luteotropin" necessary for the initiation of pregnancy or pseudopregnancy.
