1 United States Department of Agriculture, Beltsville, Maryland 20705

Prepuberal crossbred gilts averaging 66.0 kg body weight were hypophysectomized (HYPOX) or sham HYPOXED and injected im with 1000 IU pregnant mare’s serum gonadotropin (PMS) the day before or 2 or 5 days after surgery. Ovaries were examined 4 days after PMS injection. PMS stimulated follicular growth with little follicular atresia in the sham HYPOX gilts. PMS stimulated follicular growth in HYPOX gilts injected on the day before HYPOX, but PMS failed to stimulate follicular growth in HYPOX gilts injected on Day 2 or 5 after HYPOX. A high incidence of late follicular atresia was observed in ovaries of HYPOX gilts injected with PMS on the day before HYPOX.
