Rhythmic Function of Pineal Hydroxyindole-O-Methyl Transferase during the Estrous Cycle: An Analysis

EDWARD P. WALLEN 1, and JEROME M. YOCHIM 1

1 Department of Physiology and Cell Biology, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas 66045

Analysis of changes in pineal hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase activity during the estrous cycle of the rat revealed that at least two rhythms may interact to create a complex waveform with a beat frequency. The data suggest a role for the pineal gland in the regulation of the timing of reproductive cyclicity.
