Changes in Ovarian Circulation Following FSH Administration to HCG-Primed Adult Rats

JEAN M. CONS 1, and CLIFFORD L. KRAGT 1

1 Physiology—Anatomy Dept., University of California, Berkeley and Upjohn Company, Kalamazoo, Michigan

The effects of FSH on the circulatory system of the adult rat ovary were investigated by histological examination and by residual blood volume studies of the unprimed and HCG-primed rat. Morphological changes in the ovarian vasculature were studied in tissue from adult rats injected intravenously with ovine or rat [131I]FSH, [131I]-labeled albumin, or 131iodine. Results indicated that FSH in HCG-primed adult rats caused leukocyte accumulation in veins and capillaries throughout the ovary and that this change correlated with ovarian [131I]FSH uptake by the ovary. FSH also caused a reduction in ovarian residual blood volume beginning 3 h after injection.
