Bicarbonate Requirements for Culture of One-Cell Rabbit Ova to Blastocysts

MICHAEL T. KANE 1

1 Department of Physiology, University College, Cork, Ireland

A total of 534 fertilized one-cell rabbit ova were cultured in media with and without bicarbonate. Ova grew to the morula stage in a Hepes buffered medium without added bicarbonate whereas the presence of bicarbonate was necessary for progression to the blastocyst stages. Levels of bicarbonate as low as 0.31 mM allowed blastocyst formation to take place.
