Morgantown, West Virginia 26506 Prostaglandins F (PGF) were measured in uterine tissue and venous plasma of 112
pseudopregnant rats in two experiments. Content and concentration of PGF in uterine tissue,
measured on days 4, 6 and 9 through 13, increased from day 4 to 6 and were even higher on days 9
and 11 (P<0.01), but were lower on days 10 and 12. Concentration of PGF in uterine venous
plasma, measured on days 6 and 9 through 14, was highest on day 9 (P<0.05) and higher on days
6, 9 and 11 (P<0.05) than on days 10, 12, 13 and 14. Progesterone in corpora lutea was greatest
on day 6 and decreased through day 13 of normal pseudopregnancy. To determine whether deciduomata inhibit secretion of PGF by the uterus, uterine tissue and
venous plasma of 126 pseudopregnant rats with and without deciduomata were assayed for PGF in
a third experiment. Samples were collected at 0600, 1200 and 1800 h on days 6, 9 and 12. Uterine
concentration and content of PGF were consistently as high or higher in rats with deciduomal
tissue than in control rats. Average concentration of PGF in uterine venous plasma was higher in
rats with deciduomata (13.2 ng/ml) than in control rats (9.0 ng/ml). Progesterone in peripheral
plasma was higher on day 9 than on days 6 or 12 in rats with deciduomal tissue. In control rats,
plasma progesterone declined with day and was lower than in rats with deciduomal tissue except
on day 6. In control rats and in those with deciduomal tissue, PGF was higher on day 9 than on
day 6; progesterone was lower on day 9 than on day 6 in controls only. It is concluded that
deciduomata prolong the functional life span of corpora lutea by some means other than inhibition
of uterine secretion of PGF on days 6, 9 or 12 of pseudopregnancy.
