1 Nuffield Institute for Medical Research,
University of Oxford,
Osler Road, Headington, Oxford OX3 9DS The left or right uterine artery was ligated in 100 rats on Day 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or 12 of
gestation. Uterine arterial ligation had no apparent effect on survival, malformation or sex ratios of
fetuses examined on Day 22. There was a small decrease in fetal weight and an increase in placental
weight particularly after ligation on Day 9. Placental hypertrophy, as an adaptation to impaired
uterine circulation, is discussed.
