-pregnane-3,20-dione
in the Peripheral Circulation of the Prepartum and Postpartum Mare
1 Department of Animal Science,
Texas Agricultural Experiment Station,
Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas 77843 Blood samples were collected from 8 mares for 10 days before and 2 days after parturition.
The steroid, 21-hydroxy-5
-pregnane-3,20-dione, was tentatively identified in the peripheral
circulation of the mare by its cross reactivity after acetylation with an antiserum and by its elution
pattern on microcelite and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. The presence of deoxycorticosterone was determined in the same manner. Deoxycorticosterone and 21-hydroxy-5
-pregnane-3,20-dione were elevated from 30 to 6 h (P<0.05) before parturition. The level of these
steroids was lower (P<0.05) from 18 to 42 h postpartum. The source of these steroids is not
known and their function is not established.
