Baltimore, Maryland 21201 Total calcium concentrations of cumulus enclosed oocytes in the rat were studied during
PMSG-induced LH release. The concentration of total calcium in cumulus enclosed oocytes increased concomitantly with increased serum LH up to and including 53 h after PMSG treatment;
thereafter calcium level decreased. These increments in calcium concentrations and serum LH
levels occurred at a time of an increase in germinal vesicle breakdown. The present data point to a relationship between the LH surge, calcium levels in oocytes and
germinal vesicle breakdown in the rat.
