Ovulation, Ovum Maturation and Changes in Plasma and Adrenal Progesterone Concentrations in the Musk Shrew (Suncus murinus)

M. J. HASLER 1, and A. V. NALBANDOV 1

1 Animal Genetics Laboratory, University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois 61801

Ovum maturation, ovulation and plasma and adrenal progesterone concentrations were examined in 30 adult female musk shrews from the time of copulation to 30 h postcopulation (pc). Ovulation occurred as early as 15 h pc, with the majority of ovulations occurring by 17 h pc. The first polar body was formed either prior to or after ovulation. "Old eggs" were found in one shrew. There was no significant change in plasma progesterone levels from copulation to 30 h pc, but adrenal progesterone concentrations at 17 h pc were significantly elevated.
