San Antonio, Texas 78284 A technique for the collection of utero-ovarian vein blood in the baboon is described. It makes
use of a laparoscope and transabdominal puncture with a long blood-collection needle. This technique enables study of changes in the gonadal hormone output before these hormones become
diluted in the peripheral circulation. It is expected that levels of hormones in the utero-ovarian vein
blood would be more indicative of the hormonal milieu in the ovarian compartment than are the
peripheral levels. Thus, this method provides a mechanism for longitudinal studies of dynamics of
the ovarian hormonal output without resorting to repeated laparotomies.
