Ovarian Compensatory Hypertrophy Following Unilateral Ovariectomy During the Breeding Season in the Ewe

RAO S. MALLAMPATI 1, and L. E. CASIDA 1

1 Department of Genetics, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin 53706

A 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 factorial experiment was conducted with 44 mature ewes to study the effects of: (1) unilateral ovariectomy, (2) presence or absence of the corpus luteum (CL), (3) removal of the right or the left ovary, and (4) number of ovulations at the last previous estrus.

The length of the estrous cycle was shortened by removal of either the CL-containing ovary or the CL alone with no significant difference between the two groups in the amount of shortening.

Total follicular fluid weight and number of follicles above 5 mm in diameter showed significant compensatory hypertrophy, but only if a corpus luteum was present in the ovary. The percentage distribution of follicles of different sizes was significantly different between hemicastrated and control ewes.
