1 Instituto de Biología y Medicina Experimental, Obligado 2490, Buenos Aires, Argentina Phenylethanolamine-N-methyl transferase (PNMT) activity has been found in cauda
epididymides of mature rats. The specific and total enzymatic activity of the region was significantly increased
during sexual maturation of the animals (36 days: 3.38 ± 1.13; 44 days: 9.60 ± 1.12; 90
days: 53.77 ± 3.48 pmoles/mg protein/30 min), and by HCG administration to immature rats (44 days: 14.36 ± 1.31 pmoles/mg protein/30 min). In adults, hypophysectomy diminished the total PNMT activity of the cauda epididymidis. Very little activity was found in the other regions of the epididymides or in the testes.
The presence of PNMT activity in cauda epididymidis, its increase during maturation,
and the augmented activity produced through HCG administration suggests a significant
role for this enzyme in the physiological processes of this particular region of the epididymis.
